Site preparation, stabilisation and next steps

Site preparation works have continued at Foxton Solar Farm since February 2026.

During this time, contractors have cleared the site and removed asbestos-containing materials, abandoned vehicles, tyres and other large demolition waste that had been illegally dumped over many years. Clearing the area has been an important step in making the site safer, restoring the land and preparing it for its future use as a solar farm generating renewable energy.

Earthworks and site stabilisation

Most bulk earthworks, including site levelling, are now complete. The current focus is on establishing grass and vegetation cover across the completed areas, alongside other minor site works.

Where possible, existing topsoil has been reused. Additional topsoil and hay mulch have also been applied, together with grass seed and fertiliser, to support vegetation growth and help manage dust and sand during windy conditions.

Over the next one to two spring months, the project team will focus on vegetation establishment and ongoing site maintenance before completing the final stage of remaining earthworks. The remaining earthworks are minor compared with the works completed to date.

Working with iwi

We have engaged with iwi and local hapū throughout the earthworks. Cultural Monitoring Officers are available to provide guidance and assist should any cultural material, taonga or kōiwi be discovered.

What happens next

Once the remaining earthworks are complete, the project will move into the next phases:

  • Site investigations are expected to take place in early 2027, including geotechnical investigations and pile testing to inform detailed design and construction planning.
  • Main construction of the solar farm is currently expected to begin in mid to late 2027.

The site will continue to be actively monitored and maintained throughout this period. We will continue to share project updates as works progress.
